In the middle of winter when nothing is growing outside…especially nothing green, it is so inviting to go to the Produce Department at Baker Food Co-op.  The décor is inviting and makes a person think ‘spring and green’ when they shop.

One of the Co-op’s newest working members was overheard saying, “I just love to get my produce here.  It’s so fresh…and tastes so good.”  Another ‘plus’ is that it hasn’t been under a water-spray bath for long periods of time.

There is a great amount of work involved in the Produce Department.  On the average each week, 7-8 Working Members have a part in keeping the department looking good and the produce tasting great!  That number varies from month to month, season to season and year to year.

Well before produce arrives, it must be ordered.  Tuesday is delivery day and most of the Working Members come to unload freight, wash, package and display the produce.  Others come any time during the week to clean refrigerators, sweep and mop the floors, restock produce, update forms, record produce losses, create and mark price tags and research information that shoppers need.

These produce ‘worker bees’ have a lot of fun while they work.  One of the members has said, “If I had to brag about the Produce Department, I would brag about the ‘vibe’ or ‘spirit’ of the people working there. When they get together they are…well…happy! And you can’t help but get infected by their light-heartedness.  That happy influence stays with me for the rest of the day.”

Just think, we’re going to celebrate our second anniversary in March at the store here on Broadway AND we have reached the half million dollar mark!  So what is the heart of the Baker Food Co-op?

Working members include: cashiers, packagers, freight crew, cleaning crew, department managers, staff, shopping members and a working Board.  What are some of the things we do as your Board?  I  represent Baker Food Co-op twice a month at the Baker City business meetings, talking up our store and products… and I include free samples!

We commit to attend the Co-op Board meeting once a month and the quarterly membership meetings.  We take care of the business behind the scenes, review the bills and pay them.

So congratulations on our anniversary and HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

The coconut is highly valued for its nutritional and curative properties but it is the oil in the coconut that makes it truly superior as a health food. Coconut oil is comprised predominately of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). This fat is completely different from saturated fat found in meats and other vegetable oils and has a number of health benefits. One of the many benefits of coconut oil is that it helps protect against heart disease, stroke and hardening of the arteries. In addition to the germ-fighting properties, medical research has shown that medium-chain triglycerides also possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

The benefits from using coconut oil are many. Coconut oil can also help people to lose excess body fat, increase energy and improve thyroid function. The fatty acids in coconut oil are used by the body as a source of fuel to produce energy. This stimulates metabolism. An increase in metabolism, in turn, increases the rate at which calories are consumed.
