October is Non-GMO Month in the Snack Aisle!

In the last dozen years the prevalence of genetically modified ingredients in our food supply has expanded by leaps and bounds.  It is nearly impossible to walk into a snack aisle of any major supermarket and pick up a product that does not contain GMOs.  The majority of corn, soy and canola grown and consumed in our country is GMO and those ingredients are in nearly all of our food.  While the companies behind this technology tell consumers that it is safe to eat, there have been no long term studies on the safety of these products in our diets.  Studies on rats and mice fed GMO diets of corn and soy show the development of cancerous tumors, liver and kidney damage, reduced fertility and high infant death rates.  The choice of whether or not to feed this same diet to our children is ours alone, as no labeling of GMO ingredients is required anywhere in the United States.

Here in your Co-op snack aisle we have been doing everything possible to bring safe and  healthy snack food to you and your family.  Many of our products are either certified organic (meaning gmo-free) or certified to contain zero GMOs by the NON-GMO Project.  Look for and purchase these products and make the choice to support sustainable, organic agriculture that provides healthy, truly natural food for your family.

Thanks and Happy Eating!!

Snacks and Beverages

Hi Co-op Shoppers!
Recently I have had the pleasure to take over management of our snack and beverage aisle.  Our goal is to have healthy snack foods that taste great for you and your family to enjoy.  Already there have been many new products added to our shelves that have the best ingredients possible and it has been fun watching a lot of them go through the checkout stand. Watch for more new products coming soon and if you have any healthy favorites you feel the co-op is missing let us know.   I look forward to hearing your requests and comments about our snack food aisle, so please leave requests on the snack and beverages clipboard and comments in my box in the working member office. Look for more info about new and healthy snacks to be coming to this space  in the future.

Happy eating!

New Snacks & Beverages for July

Well Hello, and Happy July, I have lots of things in to keep you cool and hydrated, fueled and full.

Think thin protein bars with 19-20 grams of protein, come in and check out the great flavors.
Pro bars are in and boy are they good, these are both a meal all in its own.
We have a lot of new gums in also, in a wide range of flavors, and these ones are good for your teeth.
I have Yaya’s Popcorn back in three flavors: Cheddar, Herb and Kettle Corn.
There is also a new Stacy’s Pita Chip in Parmesan and Herb.
There are many kinds of soda in made without sugar added–they are sweetened with
fruit juice, a great way to enjoy a bubbly, cool soda. I will be getting in a new root beer in
the next few weeks too so keep and eye out for that.

To keep yourself hydrated naturally come in and get some of the Coconut Water. We have it in ready-to-drink or in a powder form where you can just add it to your water bottle. The powder comes in three flavors: Original, Pom-Raspberry and Pineapple.

The bulk snack section is a great place to find lots of good snacks; we have a whole selection of sesame sticks and chunks of energy to choose from.
Coffee, coffee – now is the perfect time to start making iced coffees. So come on in and get some Raven’s Brew or Dooley Mountain Coffee and enjoy a hot cup in the morning, but make enough to have a iced coffee later in the day for that perfect and cool pick me up.
For those of you who like Stevia, it is a great way to add flavor to your coffee and we have many flavors to choose from. We also have Stevia available in a small, plastic dropper for on the go or to carry in your purse. If you have been wanting to try some flavors but do not want to buy a big bottle we now have a flavor pack with 4 small ones in it, again great for on the go.

Well folks, enjoy the hot weather, for I think that it is here for a while and remember to stay hydrated!
God Bless, Sarah Miller

Mint Iced Tea Recipe

by Nadine Titus, Boxed Tea Manager

Ingredients:

  • 4 mint teabags
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 teaspoons sugar
  • fresh mint leaves

Directions:
Steep teabags 3-5 minutes in pot of hot water. Place sugar in beverage pitcher; pour in small quantity of mint tea. Stir. Pour in rest of tea. Fill two tumblers with tea ice cubes (see recipe below) and fill tumblers with the brewed tea. Garnish with mint leaves if desired. ENJOY!

Tea Ice Cubes:
Make a fresh pot of your favorite tea. Pour into ice cube trays and freeze. Filtered water makes the best tea ice cubes.

Be sure to check out the boxed tea section. We have added a few new ones. Be sure to try some iced tea on our next warm day!
